HOTD: Oct 25th

Hijab Of The Day

I have always wanted to post up a HOTD entry and plus, I seriously am in love with this scarf!

I bought it from Forever 21@313 Somerset for SGD15. Price wise it's acceptable since most shiny scarves are in the comparable price range.

It wraps easily without much tugging, tightening or straightening.

As you can probably see from the photo (taken with my iPhone), the shiny finish comes off from silver tone thread.

The best part is how soft and lightweight it feels.

Ok. That's it for scarf yumminess! Will try to take a photo of the one I'm wearing today.

Peace lovies. Until the next post!

People: Lauren Conrad

There are a lot of people that I respect and admire. The majority of them have earned their place in the world through their hard work and their intelligence (read: the old fashioned way).

Nowadays, its rare to find new, up-and-coming role models. Especially for women. With all the Paris Hilton wannabes and the seemingly ever-growing cult that idolizes the Lindsay Lohan culture of partying, boozing and drug-related incidences, it's rare to find a well-known woman that can inspire the hearts and minds of the millions of women across the globe.

Lauren Conrad is not, by far, a woman that is set to inspire the hearts and minds of womankind across the globe. She is not the next Mother Teresa, nor is she the next Grace Kelly.

But, somehow, to me, she is inspiring and I can honestly say that I admire her.

Her rise to fame
...or infamy.... you decide

At 17, Lauren was cast by MTV producers in the new reality TV show Laguna Beach. If I remember correctly, besides the Real World franchise, MTV never really had a reality TV show like Laguna. After a number of successful seasons on Laguna Beach, she moved to Los Angeles and the MTV mega-hit The Hills got started.

I know all this because I am an avid Hills fan. Somehow, quips about her life seem to penetrate through all the drama and I seem to retain this somewhat non-essential information. Like every other Lauren fan, The Hills Season 6 was the worst of all seasons and that was the spiraling end of that.

Anyhoot. The Hills was a c a s h - c o w. Seriously. I think by the time the show was in it's FIFTH season (which was also the season that Lauren left), Lauren was earning about USD70,000 an episode.

Why she's pretty awesome
... to me at least

But all the above is not the reason I like the girl. As my Daddy would say, "She's a smart cookie."

She may have earned USD70,000 an episode, and I'm sure she earns more now too since the show seems to be on syndication-mode, but she had all the genius of a business woman. In her contract, she made a deal with MTV to say that no one else on the show could earn as much as her.

Say it with me now. Phwoar. Genius.

The next highest earners were Heidi and Spencer (before he turned crazy of course) at about USD60,000.

Stellar business sense? Check!

Lauren Conrad: Fashion Designer

To be honest, her designs aren't super fantastic or incredibly revolutionary. To me, her collections always seem to be reflective of her as a person. To the best of my knowledge, as a fashion designer, you don't design for yourself, you design for others. But in her case, it works.

Why? She has millions of fans. Literally. And that's even before she decided to start her own collection. Think about it from a business point of view. You need a market, you need a consumer database. She had all that. She was just capitalizing on her passion for fashion (urgh, sorry for the cliche) and her already rising stardom.

Her initial offering as a fashion designer didn't fare too well. Stuff seemed overpriced and her stand-alone fashion house wasn't able to stand alone. But that's ok, cause she's LC. She has a super fanbase and if she can't do it on her own, companies would literally trip over themselves to help her.

Enter Kohl's and the LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's collections. They are doing incredibly well and what may have started out as a guest designing spot has turned into a full time fashion gig.

Ability to bounce back after failure? Check!

Lauren Conrad: Author

Let's not stop at the fashion. The woman is conquering novels too. She has the L.A. Candy trilogy series, of which the latest and final episode Sugar and Spice was just released. Best part? She is a NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR

Um... who wouldn't admire her? Seriously. Whoever thought she was a dumb blonde from another dumb reality TV show was probably appalled to hear that she wrote a book. Upon hearing the news that her book made the New York Times Bestseller list at #1, I'd imagine they probably got a heart attack. They're probably going to have a stroke once they hear that she's planning on writing a spin-off of one of the L.A. Candy characters.

Even better? She simultaneously released Lauren Conrad Style alongside Sugar and Spice. Lauren's known for her classic, clean-line, laid-back, California girl meets high fashion style. She's also known for her signature thick winged black eyeliner and barely there makeup look. Everyone who considers themselves a Lauren fan knows that she doesn't like eyeshadow too much which is why she sticks to eyeliner and mascara.

If I know this much about Lauren and her style, you can imagine the people who know infinitely more. And you can imagine those people, buying the book on her opinions of what style really is.

Proof of Intelligence? Check!

Parting words on Lauren.

Last but not least, Lauren is the spokesperson for mark cosmetics, a subsidiary company of Avon cosmetics.

If you don't know how successful the Avon brand is, you must have just been born. mark is aimed at a younger target market and what better way to target that market than to collaborate with a person from TV? Scratch that. What better way to advertise young, fresh makeup than with a person who is practically known for her young, fresh look?

Business no brainer. Seriously.

To be honest, I can't believe I wrote so much about Lauren. It's scary and a little creepy, but I guess I seriously admire her. She's 24 (two years older than me) and is an inspiration to young entrepreneurs. Of course, you could argue that she had the fame, which helped her tremendously. At the same time, it's what she did with her fame that impresses me the most.

She didn't party it up or get addicted to drugs. Or, for that matter, get arrested for possession of cocaine, like some other reality TV star-slash-heiress.

She used her business acumen and created for herself a growing mogul empire that, at this point, has no horizon.

Plus she's a young woman making her mark in the world.

A true role model, don't you think?

Peace lovies! Until the next post...

Makeup: Chanel 2010 Holiday Collection

It's a slow day at work and I thought I'd update the blog! I am really impressed with my dedication to the blogsphere in the last two days.

Anyhoot. I thought that since I dedicated a long post of space on my blog to MAC's Tartan Tale Holiday Collection, the only fair thing to do would be to include some other noteworthy brands.

There are loads of makeup brands out there in department stores all over our little currently hazy island but I chose the ones that I really liked and wanted to post on the blog. Some brands you may never find on my blog, purely because I am not interested

On to the collection!

Chanel
Holiday 2010 Makeup Collection
Les Tentations de Chanel
(Chanel's Temptations)

Chanel says:

A sumptuous color collection of tempting chocolates and rich fuchsias, perfect for the holiday season.

Limited Edition Items include:

I only listed the Limited Edition colors. Some pictures may not be representative of the products as the website did not provide other pictures.

Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eyeshadow: Tentation Cuivrée

Le Vernis: PulsionMica Rose

Les Tissages de Chanel Blush Duo Tweed Effect: Tweed Fuschia

Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer: Pink Pulsion, Charming, Futile, Pleasing

Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Color: Patchouli

Ombre d'Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow: Splash

My thoughts on the collection:

Much like all other Chanel collections, all very pretty, totally interesting and noteworthy. But, um.... I wouldn't really buy anything from the collection. The nail polish does look good though.

Not that I would ever claim to sensible when it comes to makeup, but I just don't see the appeal of an eyeshadow quad that is more packaging than eyeshadow. Hmm...

Peace lovies! Until the next post.

Movies: George of the Jungle

I was just watching George of the Jungle and I thought to share some fun thoughts about the film!

1. Brendan Fraser (George) has amazing hair in this movie.

2. Leslie Mann (Ursula) has amazing hair in this movie.

3. Guy who plays Lyle (Eric Roberts?) has amazing hair in this movie.

4. It's funny watching "old school" CGI (i.e. the effects on Shep his peanut loving pooch)

5. Adam Shankman did the choreography for this film! Woot! Props for Adam!

6. After I watched this movie for the first time, Brendan Fraser pretty much became the hottest man alive.

That's pretty much it. It's a great fun movie for those idiotic moments where you just need to CHILL.

Peace lovies!

Makeup: MAC 2010 Holiday Collection Tartan Tale

I L O V E Scotland.

Serious mysterious. Next to Egypt, my dream vacation would be in Scotland. I would love to explore every part of the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands, places like The Isle of Skye and Loch Ness. I would especially love it if I could putt some green at the birth place of golf i.e. St Andrews. My life would be near completion and I could want for nothing more (that statement is a blatant lie. there will always be something that I want).

So what does Scotland have to do with MAC Cosmetics? Only, possibly, the best blockbuster holiday collection EVER! (I seriously am considering this collection in higher standard to the Estee Lauder 2010 Holiday Blockbuster Collection Glamor is Golden)

Tartan Tale

Lip, Eye and Face Kits Peekaboo! Poking a little fun at the kinky part of the kilt, these incorrigible kits for Lips, Eyes and Face have some flasher fun with mirrored compacts, but remain dignified with proper M∙A∙C family crests… New giftables that prove to be seductive, cheeky, good fun, including 6 Dashing Lassie Eye Shadows, 6 Beauties Play It Cool Eye Shadows, 6 Twists of Tartan Eye Shadows, 6 Reelers & Rockers Eye Shadows, Happily Ever After and A Fabulous Fantasy Lip Kits, plus A Triumphant Blush and Hark The Heraldry Face Kits.

Check out the beautiful tartan bags filled with MAC goodies!

Lip and Eye Bags Once upon a time a bonny lass was in a Scottish ska band. She couldn’t just pick one look – punk or princess? So she chose them all…fancy that! Her loot: Dazzle the Lads Lip Bag, with Baron’s Rose Lipstick, Draw Me Close Lip Pencil and Moth to Flame Dazzleglass; Vain & Glorious Lip Bag, with Mellow Mood Lipstick, In Synch Lip Pencil and Baby Sparks Dazzleglass; Noble Knights Lash & Line Eye Bag with Teal Pigment, Blitz & Glitz Fluidline and Zoomblack Zoom Lash mascara; and finally, Violet My Love Lash & Line Kit, replete with Violet Pigment, Macroviolet Fluidline and Zoomblack Zoom Lash mascara.

Brush Bags A drawbridge lowers, an electric-guitar wails… and a Princess makes an entrance – with her bag of tricks! New M∙A∙C Brush Bags are here for every girl who wants to arrive at the ball in flawless fashion, with everything she needs in these nifty, handsome, heathery tartan modern mash-ups, trimmed in shiny patent: A Lady & Her Tricks Buff & Line Brush Collection with 168SE, 187SE, 209SE, 219SE and 252SE; Sweep Me Off My Feet Sweep & Define Brush Collection, with 129SE, 190SE, 212SE, 227SE and 275SE; She’s Got It All Apply, Define & Line Brush Collection, with 194SE, 204SE, 224SE, 266SE and 275SE. Throw on your favourite Vivienne Westwood tartan frock (knickers optional) and off you go,
perfectly ready to raise a ruckus!

And have a go at the cute packaging for the boxed sets!

A wicked tale, a Celtic conundrum! Which to choose? With a kiss from a rose, holiday kits come hither! Bawdy beauties and sexy swains swagger with safety-pin snarls and curtsy coquettishness – it takes all kinds! So we’re offering this exclusive, and extensive, lineup: 5 Sassy Pink Lassies Lipglass; 5 Sassy Coral Lassies Lipglass; 5 Sassy Neutral Lassies Lipglass. And for those that require pixie dust, 5 Warm Thrillseekers Pigments/Glitter; 5 Cool Thrillseekers Pigments/Glitter; 5 Smoky Thrillseekers Pigments/Glitter and God Save the Queens! 5 Naughty Little Vices Nail Lacquer… a new shade called “Vice Is Nice” says it all!

Of course, chicas on a real world budget won't be able to afford the whole holiday collection, so the smart chicas pick-and-choose the must-haves. Can I just say that, first, they release the Disney collab, Venomous Villains, which is a mini blockbuster collection in itself! And then, they release the holiday collection RIGHT AFTER. They should have just asked for our paychecks. :/

So here are my picks and possible buys for when the collection comes out. Keep in mind, I haven't seen swatches, so my opinions are based on the press release photos.

First Impression Must-Haves

Hark the Heraldry Face Kit. Includes Dame (Satin, sophisticated blue-pink), Plum Foolery (Sheertone, faint dusty plum) and Oh So Fair (Beauty Powder, pale pink *from Venomous Villains).

I chose this one over "A Triumphant Blush Face Kit" because of the colors. The blue-pink and plum could show up quite nicely on my dark skin tone. And honestly, what is the purpose of me buying a color like Smooth Harmony? Forget contouring! It'd just turn out to be like face powder on my skin. Moving on...

Vain & Glorious Lip Bag. Includes Mellow Mood Lipstick (Lustre, sheer pink), Baby Sparks (Dazzleglass, sparkly baby pink) and In Synch (Lip Pencil, light pink *from Too Fabulous).

I love me some pink lips. So it was quite brainless that I'd choose this lip set over the "Dazzle the Lads Lip Bag". Although the peachy nudes from that set might win me over, for now, I'm sticking with the Vain & Glorious lip bag.

Her blooming Cheek (Satin, bright irredescent blue-pink).

A lot of people would get so afraid of this pink color that they would literally run (or at least turn) the other way. Trust me, I used to be one of those people. But after discovering the power of such a beautiful color on your cheeks, I say "I am not afraid!" BRING IT. I hope to get it and show you all what I mean by this :D

As for what I didn't choose... the eyeshadows look impeccable but I won't ever bring myself to use them and destroy the lovely tartan design (read: waste). No pigments, nail polish or limited edition brushes for me! None of them strike me as an absolute must-have!

Updates: October 19th 2010

Alright! I finally downloaded an App that helps me post blog entries on-the-go (read: from my iPhone!).

Hopefully I shall be returning proper to the blogsphere with better posts (more pictures!). More importantly with more frequent posts!

I don't really get the luxury of slacking in front of the computer and blogging. I don't even FB much anymore. I tend to just use my iPhone wherever I am to connect to the interwebs.

Like right now, I'm sitting at a bus stop and waiting for my usually late/weird timing bus.

Lovely handy feature this app!

Work It! - The Elusive Line of Separation

I'm new to the working world and I've always believed that bringing work home was an integral part of work life.

I am suddenly realizing that there is a need for a thick line of separation.

And this is only after three and a half weeks of work.

I guess it makes simple sense.

Don't bring work home because work is work, and home is home. You don't bring your home to work, so don't bring work home.
